Court's Life Soundtrack: When I get down
I LOVE MUSIC!!!
That said....I wanted to put together some type of compilation of the songs that have helped me through some of the roughest, halfway-miserable times of my life. These songs are from all types of genres and at different points in my life God has used them to change my perspective on a lot of things. After trying to compile some of my life's tracks into 10 songs, I realized that I'm probably gonna have to do this a couple (or 5) more times to account for all the songs, but nonetheless here's the first one.
1. Road Trip - Kirk Franklin

When I Get Down
1. Road Trip - Kirk Franklin
"I wanted to give up. Some days I tried, but your hand wouldn't let me. Now, I'm alright."
Kirk Franklin is mad dope. PERIOD! The lyrics of this song have been the sentiments of my heart at some of my lowest points. It's not the typical "WOE" is me song. It's upbeat with a dope groove that I've even worked out to. It keeps it real about how we feel all while reminding us that it's alriiiiiiiighhht! #ItsAlright
9. Contentment - The Anointed Pace Sisters
I actually heard this song when I was younger and I loved the groove. Once I got older and listened to the lyrics, my love for the record moved beyond simply the music. The key to happiness is contentment, simply stated. We find contentment in Jesus. That's it. That's the key to our contentment...Jesus.
This is another song I thought was dope when I was a kid (I mean, all of his live DVDs were hype). When I was studying for the bar, like the HARDEST time of my life, I kept this song going! TRULY, I had, and have, no other choice but to trust God. That's it. (This video has subtitles, but it's the only live version I could find. So...boom.)
BONUS: "May your bad days prove that God is good."
So, I know said 10, but I didn't wanna wait till the next one (cause, let me be honest...there will be another one) to get this one out.
This song is sooooooooo real! Like, it takes a certain level of faith to say, "You know what. It doesn't matter what is happening, good or bad, God you're still good and I choose to focus on that." So, add this one to the list.

Till next time, peeps...*peace fingers*
2. W. A. Y. S. - Jhené Aiko
Sometimes just smiling is a whoooolllleee tasks. This song kinda puts things into perspective. Truly life itself doesn't get easier, but we get stronger. That's enough to smile about. Why aren't you smiling?
3. I'll Trust You - Richard Smallwood
"I won't dread the terror by night, for angels are all around me. So, I will not fear."
Get ready to ugly cry! Yo! this song here hits you, deeply. If you're struggling to trust God with the unknown this one gives you that necessary push. It's based in scripture and let me be frank...Richard Smallwood is a composer of composers. So yeah.... (Metallic suits, too? Ha! RETROO!)
4. God is Real - India Arie
People who REALLY know me know how I feel about India, but this song RIGHT here...it's another "perspective shaper." Sometimes life makes you feel like God is sooooo far away and, at times if you let it, non-existent, but if you look around at the flowers, the sky, the rain...there's really no question as to whether God actually exists. He's there...and he's a master creator, taking our rubbish and building something BEAUTIFUL!!!
5. Sunny Side of the Street - Jon Batiste
This classic record gives me all the happy feels. That's really it. I could've easily put Louis on here, but I like this kind of new classic feel with Jon Batiste and the Stay Human band. This isn't the recorded version, but this particular "Love Riot" (which he calls his impromptu second lines) is dope.
6. All Things Well - Jonathan McReynolds
So, my music library is super diverse (obvi), but this artist probably accounts for most of my songs. (and I've seen him live 3 times so...he's a favorite!)
BUT ABOUT THIS SONG: like Jonathan says, this song is for everybody who's about four five seconds from wilding. That's it.
7. When I Wake Up - Jill Scott
Jilly from Philly!!! This one kind of takes you through your emotions, but brings you to the perspective that when you get through it, it's gonna be beautiful. Weeping only last ONE night, but when I wake up....BABY!! *clap* *clap*
8. Gonna Be Alright - Mali Music
"I see all that you're going through and it's gonna be alright."
Scripture teaches us that ALLLL things work together for our good. All of it. Everything. That said, it might not be alright, but it's always going to be alright. Sometimes you just need a quick reminder. Read Romans 8 and listen to this record.

10. No Other Choice - Tye Tribbett
"I have no other choice but to trust you. That's all I can do. I have no other choice but to believe."
"I have no other choice but to trust you. That's all I can do. I have no other choice but to believe."
BONUS: "May your bad days prove that God is good."
